We Brits have a reputation as keen tea drinkers. In addition to the brew however, we now drink approximately 95 million cups of coffee per day.
With more of us heading out over the next few weeks, you might want to rethink the paper cup you are handed at your favourite coffee shop and instead make sure to bring a reusable one with you.
Here are some facts on your take out cup of joe
Less than 1% of coffee cups are recycled. Disposable paper cups contain polyurethane plastic, making composting and recycling extremely rare
Coffee cups that end up in UK landfill sites produce an annual carbon footprint equivalent to over 152,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (similar to 33,300 cars a year)
Half a million cups are littered every day
Every year 6.5 million trees are cut down to produce paper coffee cups
Packaging producers only pay for 10% of the cost of packaging disposal and recycling
