Meet the Maker: Rose, The Good Zest Company

The Good Zest Company's Story

The catalyst for the creation of The Good Zest Company was when my husband had an allergic reaction to a branded shampoo. The Shampoo was marketed as ‘natural’ and the brand imagery implied the same, however when I read the list of ingredients and did a little digging, the shampoo was in fact chemically rich and artificially enhanced. Practically nothing about it was ‘natural’. I was disappointed and felt that I had been duped by clever marketing tactics. As my children also have sensitive skin, I started looking for organic hair & skin care products for all the family. I quickly realised that it is important to be ‘certified’ as organic by the Soil Association as their level of compliance is the most stringent and trusted organic standard in the world. Nothing is more important that the quality and integrity of ingredients, whether this be what you put on your skin or what you eat.

However, whilst there are some fantastic Organic hair and skin care brands I felt there were very few that were also plastic free and sustainable. Being kind to our skin and to the Planet should be mutually compatible objectives. Hence, I decided to start my own hair & skin care brand ‘The Good Zest Company’ - all our ingredients are Certified Organic and we are also Eco friendly. I also love Aromatherapy and the amazing healing power of essential oils, particularly Citrus oils which have been used for centuries to help ease the mind and calm the soul. Hence, I called the brand ‘The Good Zest Company’ as all our products are infused with organic citrus oils.

What was your first sustainable swap?

The first swaps my family and I made was probably our everyday cleaning products. Everything we use now from laundry power, household cleaning sprays, fabric conditioner and floor wash is all Eco, refillable and sustainable. My children also have bamboo toothbrushes as I find it shocking to think every toothbrush we’ve ever used is still in existence in some landfill site.

What was your environmental epiphany?

The Good Zest Company is also cruelty free and we are currently working through the process of getting accreditation from Cruelty International so we can use the ‘Leaping Bunny’ logo on our website. This is quite an astringent process and involves interrogation of your suppliers. We hope to have approval soon, and this is a key objective for the immediate future for the brand. It upsets me every time I think of the amount of plastic waste in our oceans and the harm it does to our beautiful sea life. I recently wrote a Blog article for The Good Zest Company website about the harm Plastics ravage on our wildlife and how as individuals we can all do a small amount to make a big difference.

What is your biggest accomplishment as a brand so far?

Since the original idea in 2019, and launch of The Good Zest Company in early 2020 I have been amazed and grateful at how well the Brand has been received and the fanatic customer feedback and loyalty. It’s incredibly rewarding to create products that you know are kind to the skin, the Planet and all living things - to give customers a viable alternative to chemical and plastics is wonderful.

Fast forward five years, what's next for The Good Zest Company?

Everything we create is handcrafted in small batches, this artisan philosophy is at the heart of of what we do. Therefore, our aspirations are linked to developing and slowly expanding our Zesty product lines. We have just recently launched an organic mandarin body oil and an organic Zesty candle - as the purity of the air we breathe is important too.

Don't forget we are offering 10% off the entire Good Zest collection with code ZESTY10 (offer available until 14.03.2021)
